spectating mode will be very usefull for this ...
the talk to frog idea is good , if the computer software can control who wins and who cheats , sounds perfect ...
something like a quest
with a start line and count down to open the door ... like in pvp
and why not a finish line with some npc claping
you pay to do quest , winner gets most of the money , i dont say all , cose the production team needs to feed their babys.

I say you get your stuff together and contact Anet about your guild wanting to put on an event. They may have a way to disable map jumping.

Hah, I was just thinking about this the other day and decided to do a search for it. Although I was thinking more on the lines of single person runs with the second person along as a judge.
Like the idea of having one guy die at the start of each map run to observe that there's no cheating.
I was also wondering about another possible loophole though. Running into mobs about 1/2, 3/4 of the way up and dying so that they get resurrected at the shrine nearest to the map out point. Maybe it should be shortest time and least number of deaths to win? The judge can keep count of deaths.

This would take a lot of coordination to pull off and keep everything fair, but I think it would be awesome to watch / participate in.

you have a good idea but I think it would be better with this solution. Have the guilds provide the three runners and one member from another guild *not in the race* that has been newly created. Or if you cannot trust them I know plenty of people who would like a free run to droks (myself included). But I think the best idea is use people that you can trust or know personally. Because say joe blow from guru says I'll be a judge and has already gotten to droks without leveling much gets offered a fourth of the grand prize and agrees to take it you can't really stop them.
but you have a very good idea

It would be a fun community event for those involved...
Those who are in it honestly and for fun and prizes and unfortunately those who just want the prize and will try to cheat to get it.
Granted it might not seem so fun once you're up to your ears in planning and organising and management. Nonetheless if it ever happens I think I would feel that it was fun in the end.
A few things:
1. Although a run from Ascalon City to Bloodstone Fen would be cool, it would be good to start small to test things out first. Best to chart a run that no one really does. Maybe starting at Grendich Courthouse, once round Dragon's Gullet and back.
2. A good runner to test run the course has to be done so approx. time to run it is known. That way if anyone is way under that there is some reason to suspect they were cheating.
3. Random assignment of the accompanying judges might be better. It's too easy for teams to bring friends even if they are from different guilds. Put all the judges' names in a bowl and pick from there.
4. Definitely need checkpoints at designated cities.
5. Might need to limit the number of participants, which is out of style with a Marathon I know, but it would be nearly impossible to manage 100 or so players. Not to mention 8.
I think I've been thinking about this too much...ah well, anyone? anyone?

no offense but these types of races dont work because most of the time its based on luck(just stand back let the person get crippled or frozen then run past and win) we did this in LBS but it wasnt that fun :/

wraps could work as "judge". Every member of the team needs to provide the video if asked.
